As a follow up on the “Xennials Turn 40” post, I wanted to highlight my husband’s 4oth birthday party. I knew I wanted to do something extraordinary to celebrate his 40th. I decided on a surprise party that combined three things of his favorite things…Friends & Family, Mexican food, and GOLF. My husband is started golfing about ten years ago when I gifted him lessons for his 30th birthday. It was love at first swing. I searched Pinterest for golf themed birthdays and hit the ground rolling.
Once I confirmed the attendance of his mother and brother (and his family) from Georgia, his best friend from Florida, and other special guests; I used the app, Hobnob, to manage the invites. Hobnob allows users to create invites via text message or email and guest RSVP by merely replying to your text message or email. And the best part is that I was able to chat with guests, collect RSVPs, manage photos, and send instant text updates.
With the guest list confirmed, I had to find a location. I knew I wanted to feature a “This is your life” type video presentation, so I would need a place private room to accommodate up to 50 people with an LCD set up that would not be a budget buster. Inspiration came in the form of one of our family’s favorite local restaurants, Aldaco Mexican cuisine, less than 5 miles (!) away from our house. SCORE!
My sister, Jessica, lives about two hours away and was my de-facto party planner. She warehoused all of the party decorations and was critical in making sure the party stayed a surprise.
Compiling the pictures for the video turned out to be a bigger task than I initially thought. I was always peeking over my shoulder to make sure my husband was not hip to my plans. It took almost two months to organize all of my pictures and videos. I enlisted the help of one of my dearest friends, Katlyne Hill, of Kate Hill Photography Atlanta. Over the years, Katlyne has been more than a friend and sorority sister. She planned my wedding and took my maternity pictures with my son. She’s amazing! She translated my vision into a 22-minute video presentation that highlighted my husband’s life from childhood to fatherhood and everything in between. It was amazing. He was overwhelmed, and there was not a dry eye in the room during the video.
It was a lovely day shared with his friends and family. Only nine short years left to plan his 50th:)
